Arias from Lucio Silla (Milan, 1772)
Symphony in D, KV 84 (Milan/Bologna, 1770)
Giovanni Battista Sammartini -
Sinfonia per camera in E-flat (Milan, 1772)
Niccolo Jommelli -
Overture and Arias from Armida abbandonata (Naples, 1770)
with
Heather Buck, soprano
While on his own Grand Tour, the 14-year-old Mozart attended the premiere of Jommelli's Armida abbandonata in Naples. Jommelli wrote Armida late in a great career; he was revered by public and musicians alike. Two years later Mozart was commissioned to write Lucio Silla for Milan's carnival season of 1773.
Anna de Amicis, the famous soprano was the prima donna of both Lucio and Armida. Her vocal and dramatic virtuosity were put to thrilling use by both Jommelli and Mozart. A work by the father of the Classical symphony, G. B. Sammartini, rounds out the program.
